Obituary of Robert Bailey Metcalf

Robert B. Metcalf “Bob” passed away on 12/2/2017 at the age of 98. Bob was veteran of WWII and served in the Pacific as an Army First Lieutenant. After the war he married Betty Kellam and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Architecture. In the late 50’s he and Betty served as Methodist missionaries for four years in what was then the Belgian Congo accompanied by their three children. Upon leaving the mission service they settled in Carmichael and Bob resumed his practice as an architect until his retirement. He was a man of character, impeccable integrity, with a great love of God and family. He was also a man of many interests and abilities. He was fluent in three languages and exceptionally well-read. He was a graphic artist, a sculptor and furniture maker, craftsman and builder. He is survived by his wife, Betty, his three children, Kitty, Christopher and Norman, seven grandchildren, Chris, Rachael, Jonathan, Sarah, Moses and Robbie, and three great-grandchildren, Abbey, Xander and Angelo, and “little brother” Marcus Bilby. He had a profound, positive influence on the world around him and is admired and respected by all who knew him.
